Homesteading Utensils

With all the modern appliances and utensils that are available and probably in most of your kitchens, I still believe the kitchen appliances and utensils that have stood the test of time are of utmost importance for the homestead kitchen. Virtually indestructible cast iron, hand cranked meat grinders, hand cranked grain mills, hand cranked juicers to name a few should not be overlooked when stocking your homestead kitchen.

When I first started setting up my homestead kitchen, I was amazed at the prices for some of the items. I was also amazed at the unavailability to purchase these items locally. Thanks to the world wide web most of the items you need to stock your homestead kitchen are available. Again, back to the prices of some of these items, while looking for meat grinders on-line the prices varied from about $90.00 up to $400.00. I was not willing to spend that much so I decided to make it my mission to check all thrift stores, antique stores, junk stores, swap meats and garage sales in my area as often as I could in search of the items I needed to stock my kitchen. My persistence paid off. I was able to get not one but two meat grinders for $15.00. I picked up a hand cranked juicer for $25.00 still in the box, I don’t think it was ever used. The meat grinders were found at a junk store in our small town and were dusty and dirty. If you don’t know, it is very simple to clean and recondition cast iron products.

It doesn’t matter if you seek out your homestead kitchen products at 2nd hand stores or purchase them new. You cannot go wrong with these items, as people are still using some of these utensils that are over a hundred years old. Again they stand up to the test of time.

To help you get started stocking your homestead utensils I have compiled a list of the utensils we have and use on our homestead.
