Why You Should Start a Survival Garden In Your Home
With times being the way that they are we’re all trying to save a little money. Here are some tips on how you can stretch your dollar even further with a home garden. Start planning your strategy for your next year’s growing season.
Choosing What You Should Plant
What you should do is create a list of foods you eat on a regular basis at their basic ingredients level. This should be very easy because you should understand what you eat on a meal to meal basis. A good example is a family that eats pasta or spaghetti twice a month. You should know what ingredients you put inside of that meal such as tomatoes, basil, savory, garlic, onions, peppers, and etc. So, you would know what you should focus on growing in your survival garden.
The remaining ingredients would be on your working list. You might already have these items at your grocery store to see how much the remaining items cost, and how much of these ingredients you buy. I personally use tomatoes in a nice amount of my dishes, and I know it takes a couple of pounds to make the marinara sauce. So, tomatoes are x per pound, and I need y pounds per month. X times y is how much I would end up spending if I bought just the tomatoes.
Sample working list:
■ Bell peppers
Once you’ve created that list you can see how much money is going to each of these food items and you might be surprised. But, now you know where your survival garden can really help reduce your food budget.
I’ve also noticed that their were several foods, lettuce being one of them that we ate frequently, was expensive from the store, but also went bad in our fridge before we finished it. By growing lettuce in our garden and not picking it until I’m ready to use it I no longer waste it, or the money on buying it.
Next you want to consider the amount of space you have to garden. Maybe you only have a balcony on an apartment porch that you don’t see that much sunlight, or maybe you’ve got an empty acre just waiting for something to get planted there. Most of us are somewhere in between.
There are a ton of books and resources out there such as Vermont Wildflower Farm. I highly recommend reading up on this subject because you could learn a lot about the different spaces to create a survival garden within and also the various foods you can plant as well.
Most seed selling websites will offer you numbers in both how many seeds are in a packet and what to expect per plant. This is why I recommend looking into reading and looking into the Vermont Wildflower Farm. They offer a lot of really great information with this and the seeds that they offer.
Creating your own survival garden can help you out drastically with saving money in today’s hard times. You can see money appear in areas that you didn’t see before just by starting just a simple survival garden in your home. Your family will thank you because you will have fresh fruits and vegetables at your disposal and you will start to have more money to do things that you want to do in your life.
